Here are a few questions you can ask at home to learn all about length. Choose the ones that are suitable for you and adapt the questions slightly to suit what you have available to you at home.
- Who is the tallest person in your house?
- Who is the shortest person in your house?
- Can you make a line from tallest to smallest?
- Who has the biggest hands?
- How many building blocks tall are you?
- How many blocks tall is your kitchen table?
- How many blocks long is your kitchen table?
- Find 5 objects (e.g. toy cars) and order them from smallest to biggest.
- Use a piece of string to measure the distance from fingertip to fingertip.
- Now measure the distance from your head to your toes. Which is longer?
- Use a piece of string to make a length of 1 metre. How many things around your house can you find that are about the same as 1 metre?
- How many steps does it take to reach the door?
- How many steps from the door of one room to another?
I would love to see some photos of the boys measuring all sorts of objects around their houses this week. Send them on to me so I can share all your great ideas.
