Build a tower
This is a good one if you have some cardboard boxes around. Number the boxes and then stack them in order to build a tower. Some of you are working on this at home this week. You are looking at the numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Here is a little video where I outline how to get started on the story of 5.
This week we are going to look at one of my favourites,The Gruffalo. Here are some suggestions and ideas for exploring the story at home. Sing! I know you all enjoy the Gruffalo song we do in school. Why not sing it for your families at home this week? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZfEIX2lhlI Make masks We used to wear our Gruffalo masks in school when we sang the song. You could make your own mask at home. Here is a template to get you started.
Go online Did you know there is a Gruffalo website? There are lots of activities related to the Gruffalo and also other Julia Donaldson books. Check it out here: https://www.gruffalo.com/ Here are images of some art and craft ideas that you could try at home. Treasure hunt The Gruffalo is set in a forest and we meet lots of different woodland animals. Most of us might not be able to visit a real forest at the moment but here is a little forest treasure hunt that you could set up at home in your house or garden. Can you find all the woodland animals? Can you count them?
1) Place biscuits in a food bag and, using a rolling pin, bash into small pieces.
2) In a glass bowl, melt the chocolate, butter and golden syrup over a pan of simmering water 3) When melted, remove the bowl from the heat and add in all the dry ingredients (except smarties and jelly tots). Mix well. 4) Spoon the mixture into a silicone tin or otherwise line a shallow square tin with cling film 5) Using the back of a large spoon or potato masher, press down on the mixture to level and compact. 6) Add green smarties and purple jelly tots on top to decorate. 7) Put in the fridge for 2 hours to set. 8) Cut into squares and enjoy your Gruffalo Crumble Don't forget to send me on any photos you take of yourselves trying out any of these suggestions [email protected] Next week our theme is the story We're Going on a Bear Hunt. There are so many great learning opportunities in this book. Here are a few suggestions. Have a Teddy Bear’s Picnic: Grab your favourite teddy bears, pack up a lunch box with some snacks, grab a blanket and head outside for a teddy bear’s picnic. And don’t forget to send me some photos. Sensory play: Bear hunt is full of sensory items: grass, water, mud, forest, snow. Set up some sensory bottles or sensory bins that the boys can explore and retell the story as they play. Arts and crafts: Here are few ideas of art activities you could try based on the Bear Hunt theme: Food: Why not continue your great work in the kitchen and see if you can make any of these edible Bear Hunt snacks. Go on your own Bear Hunt:
What can you find around your house to recreate your own bear hunt? Here are a few ideas. I’d love to see what other ideas you have at home. Here are a few questions you can ask at home to learn all about length. Choose the ones that are suitable for you and adapt the questions slightly to suit what you have available to you at home.
I would love to see some photos of the boys measuring all sorts of objects around their houses this week. Send them on to me so I can share all your great ideas.
Our theme this week is baking. I would love to see photos of all the lovely things that you boys make in the kitchen over the next few weeks. Maybe you help Mammy butter the toast for breakfast or maybe you help mix the batter for pancakes. I made some rice crispy buns with my son at the weekend and we also baked some banana muffins to use up those last few over ripe bananas! Please share any nice things you make over the next few weeks and if you have any simple recipes you'd like to share with your classmates send them on to me. Here's a few ideas to get you started.
